Description

The dark clouds hanging over Angram Common and the limestone ridge of Hangingstone Scar set the scene for Gresley 'K4' No.61994 'The Great Marquess' heading the return 'Fellsman' charter to Lancaster from Carlisle over Ais Gill viaduct on 8th August 2012. Ais Gill beck, in the gully below, runs off the southern face of Wild Boar Fell situated behind, at 708 metres above sea level and in the County of Cumbria, although Angram Common in the shadows beyond the train is in the County of North Yorkshire.

Comments

  • "Superb burst of sunlight on the background fells..another great SampC image, Gordon.."
  • "Absolutely Fantastic"
  • "A superb vista to witness the K4 Gordon. I know what you mean about the carriages in response to your comment on Alans photo from lower down, but at least the Mk2s are well hidden out of view, leaving only the GWR and LMS carriages the odd ones out, so I wouldnt be complaining.I think we can guarantee those two carriages will be on every Fellsman run for the foreseeable future, so really it is capturing two easily identifiable carriages on a regular working.Quite surprising how much cloud there was looking at various photos south of Appleby for this working. Hardly a cloud in the sky in the lower Eden Valley!"
  • " Thank you David, Alan and Ian. Those clouds over the back of Angram Common had been there all the time. We were very fortunate to get the sun to be honest, even though in some compositions taken at Ais Gill it looks as though it was nailed on."
  • "Wasnt it great lighting Gordon. I saw you further up the fell. Did you clone me out?"
  • "Lovely shot Gordon, well executed with the dynamic range doubtless pushing the sensor"
  • "Excellent, light is superb, another ace, UK Steam says the K4 is up to Blaenau soon!!! Well see Regards Pete"
  • " Superb, but difficult lighting to work with. Youve been zapped Alan, but thank you for wearing a dark colour anyway. I dont know where you suddenly appeared from, but I didnt see you through the Thanks Colin. Yes, this took some pulling of colours about and trying to get them as they actually were. The late afternoon light here now is just about perfect."
  • " Thanks Peter. That will draw the crowds into North Wales! Good luck."
  • "a superb shot all round"
