Sognefjellsveien, the road from Lom to Sognefjorden, is the highest road crossing between eastern and western Norway. The top is at 1434 m, this place is just after you reach the top from the west. The mountains in the background are Smørstabbtindane, reaching from 2100 to just above 2200 m and belonging to the Jotunheimen mountain massive.
The road has status as a national tourist road, it is not built for fast driving and it is not kept open in the winter. Keeping it open throught the snowy season would be a though task, as can be seen from the 3-4 m snow. The height is not exceptional - I have experienced them significantly higher in June other years.
The sticks are put there to show where road is, else you would have no chance to find it after heavy snow fall. Heavy snow falls may happen late in spring and early summer. One year they hoped to open the summer road to Geiranger (1-200 km further north) earlier than ever. But in May they got 3 m snow.
