Description
In Ithaca, NY, there's an interesting fence made out of old bicycle parts. It encloses a place that takes old bikes and fixes them up. I just read an article about the place in the newspaper. It's called Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles (RIBs). They don't exactly give away free remade bikes, but if you want one, they will train you to rebuild and refurbish one for yourself. I think you are expected to donate some volunteer time, too, to helping others do the same. The article said they had a mix of ages and incomes of the people who participate -- some Cornell professors, some poor teens. And the great thing about the program is, sometimes the teens teach the professors how to fix up a bike! Some of the kids are making themselves pretty fancy custom bikes, too. Ithaca is a wonderful city in that it has so many innovative things like this!
